McGill University professor Darin Barney will be delivering the 2007 Hart House Lecture. Awarded a Canada Research Chair in 2005, Barney will examine the challenges that living in a technological society poses for the practice of citizenship. Barney will deliver his lecture on Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 7:30pm in the Great Hall of Hart House. The lecture will be moderated by University of Toronto student Wayne Chu. Darin Barney - Lecturer

Darin Barney is a professor of Communication Studies at McGill University where he holds a Canada Research Chair in Communication and Media Studies. Barney completed his B.A. and M.A. degrees in political science at Simon Fraser University, and then his Ph.D. in political science at the University of Toronto in 1999. A pioneer working at the crossroads of social sciences and the humanities, Barney's interdisciplinary research focuses on the relationship between technology and citizenship.

Dr. Barney has written numerous books and articles on this diverse subject, with special emphasis on the democratic implications of digital information and communication technologies. He is the author of The Network Society (Polity Press 2004), Communication Technology: The Canadian Democratic Audit (UBC Press 2005), and Prometheus Wired: The Hope for Democracy in the Age of Network Technology (UBC/University of Chicago Press/University of New South Wales Press 2000). He has also written several articles on the relationship between digital technology and community, citizenship and the public sphere. In 2005, Dr. Barney won the inaugural SSHRC Aurora Prize. Barney has taught at the University of New Brunswick, the University of Ottawa, and Harvey Mudd College in California. Barney currently lives in Montreal, Canada.


Wayne Chu - Moderator

Wayne Chu is a Ph.D Candidate in the Political Science program at the University of Toronto. He received a Master of Arts degree in Political Science at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Computer Science degree at Carleton University. His research interests include internet politics, new media, social networks, and political value orientations. Wayne is the founder of Progressive Bloggers, a non-partisan community of left-leaning Canadian political bloggers, and is an avid debater, serving in the past as the Executive Director of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate.
