Cayle Films Presents
I AM HOME (1998)
Produced and Directed by Cayle Chernin
http://www.cayle.ca

From Toronto to Tel Aviv, from Brooklyn to Borisov, Beilorussia, I Am Home is a story of rediscovery and a family finding each other after being divided by historical persecution.

In the summer of 1991, Canadian actress Cayle Chernin received a letter from Russia containing an early photograph of her father, Great Grandmother, and a man who was identified as her Grandfather's youngest brother, Great Uncle Boris Chernin, believed dead after his incarceration in Siberia during World War II.

The letter would take Cayle on a personal journey from a family reunion in Cape Breton, where Her Grandfather Louis Chernin emigrated in 1911, to new found cousins in Brooklyn, to Israel, where one branch of the Russian family had gone, and finally to far away Borisov, the home of the Chernin ancestors.

This is the story of immigrants, forced from one county to take up residence in a New World. It is the story of a craving for roots. It is the story of what happens when walls come tumbling down and borders change, which celebrates heritage and survival in spite of the odds.

This personal journey reflects the experience of people worldwide. We find and lose each other, over and over. This is a story about finding ourselves.

First public screening Oct. 1997 Cape Town International Film Festival, South Africa

The Story:

Sasha Polikov (Andrey Kistitsin) is a street performer from Russia, he is free spirited, and unconventional.

While falling in love with Maria (Katy Torgovnikov), Sasha attempts to find balance between what he must do and what he wants to do to survive in his new environment.

The Making Of:

While performing twice a day, 6 days a week, at Cirque Avaia in the summer of 2007 in Niagara Falls, the film crew was simultaneously in production in Toronto for "Drink Tea Outside". The crew consisted of people currently residing in Canada, Russia and Belarus. Since the majority of the crew were performers at the shows, they coordinated stunts, constructed sets, and designed most of the wardrobe themselves. It was shot in over 30 locations, 3 cities and features 14 original soundtracks created for the film in Canada and Russia.
