Germaine Greer's adaptation of Aristophanes' Lysistrata - the sex strike will be presented at one of Toronto’s most unique outdoor performance spaces, Philosopher’s Stage at Philosopher’s Walk. Philosopher’s Stage at Philosopher’s Walk provides the ideal venue for outdoor Summer theatre, being open to the air and the stars. Known for its bawdy humour, Lysistrata tells the tale of how one woman encourages a nation of lustful ladies to deny their husbands any sexual attention until the men declare peace and put a stop to civil war. Germaine Greer's adaptation keeps all of the expected phalli, sexually charged hijinks, and anti-war rhetoric while also exploring issues of gender politics and class bias. Guaranteed to be the sexiest production ever seen on Philospher's Stage, Lysistrata comes with a 'mature content' warning: This is not a family show! Andrea Wasserman, Canopy Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, returns to direct this season after 2009’s critically acclaimed production of Romeo and Juliet. “I am so looking forward to staging another Greek classic on Philosopher’s Stage. Oedipus Rex [2006] and The Trojan Women [2004] worked so beautifully in the open air that I can’t wait to get started with this outrageous comedy!” For the 11th Season of Outdoor Theatre for Downtown Toronto, Canopy Theatre Company looks forward to continuing its record breaking growth and production success. ~~~~~~~~~~ ABOUT THE COMPANY The Canopy Theatre Company is one of Toronto’s premiere showcases for young professionals.
